good morning. thanks for joining us. more rain is falling as another storm moves across the bay area. we have team coverage a of our storm watch. abc 7 news reporter keira is in pacifica. nick smith is at sfo where holiday travelers are seeing flight delays. a quick first look at the weather. >> good morning. we are looking at a cold front

strong one moving into the bay area. all of the reds andie and yells with flooding occurring now near pedaluma. here is pedaluma. stony brook road, pen grove park some streams above flood stage. to the north, forestville looking at heavy rain. further south, southern marin county, south salito lighter rain. heavier cells here into the east bay around the san ramon valley. dublin, 5850 heavy rain. further on the peninsula looking at good cells from pacifica, half moon bay, moss beach and montera. heavy remember rain. lighter returns for sunnyvale, coupe cuper it tino and san

jose. the suze mountains have gilroy, light rain here. moisture pushinged in along the coast. winds up to 38 meals an hour in oakland with a wind advisory through 1:00 in the north bay and 2:00 through the south bay. continues to increase throughout the morning hours. we clear up, though, the second half of the day. >> all of the windy rainy weather is churning up the waves in pacifica, forcing the peer to close. that is where we find keira clapper. >> good morning. >> the wind has picked up. it is blowing us over really. my photographer is bracing herself as she holds the camera here in pacifica. the peer is is closed. the rain is is steady but the wind making everything so treacherous it morning.

the ocean is already coming oh over and breaking over the sea wall. as you can see the water is gusting as well. what is interesting is the waves themselves are smaller now that the wind is picking up but people across the coast across the bay area coast can expect anywhere from 16-foot waves today. as you you can imagine there aren't many people coming out. people are weein being warned e on alert for waves like this. because the is so awful, really no one is is out today. we did catch one man who shockingly enough told us this weather doesn't stop them from going outside. iten courages him to get out the door are. take a list. >> it is really windy right now. you you were talking your dog. >> not at all. no, we like it. we love the weather. we can't wait for it. plus we get the whole place to ourselves because everybody is

hunkered down indoors so. and we need the rain so. and the waves are awesome. huge with all of this wind. we just love to come out and be in the weather. >> reporter: you might be shocked to hear that but, yes, he definitely does have the landscape to himself because i think everyone is smart enough to stay inside. it is so windy, i cannot stress enough. and hopefully if you are headed out todayed hopefully you don't have to but if you are doing last minute holiday shopping check your live doppler 7 hd on the abc 7 news app. more rain headed in our direction and towards half moon bay, redwood city, mountain view. hopefully if you don't have to go outside today you want because these are can dangerous conditions in it which to be driving, even walking. we can definitely hear the wind coming through your mike

there and that alone tells us how gusty it is. rain and wind combination wreaking havoc for travelers. stormy weather almost always causes delays at san francisco international airport because of its runway design. nick smith is live at sfo. earlier this morning the delays were about an hour and a half for arriving flights. anything changed. >> reporter: that has not changed. you are is spot on and the problem is the wind. we have felt the wind gusts as we he drove down 101 headed here to sfo and this is a wind advisory in effect. people are slowly arriving to sfo and they can expect flight delays. an air traffic management program in effect for flights arriving to sfo and this is causing some of the arriving flights to be deplayed an

average of one hour and 37 minutes. there will be delays throughout the day until at least 6:00 p.m. it will mostly affect commuter flights and traffic along the west coast. the wind advisory currently in effect plays a large role in the reduced visibility and different landing patterns. flights now approaching from the northeast over oakland airport instead of from the southeast over the san mateo bridge. back here live, if you are dropping people off or pecking people up you need to do that quick le. we suggest that people use the cell phone lot because security that's been no joke. they are keeping people moving right along. at 9:30 i will have more information about the flights delayed and their arrival and dehe parture and even information about canceled flights. before you come to sfo if you are pecking people up or departing make sure you check your flight times. at sfo, neck smith, abc 7 you news.

looking at live doppler 7hd. now, to the school tragedy in newtown connecticut. people all over the world showing their support by sending toys, money and other gifts to the town. three more children were buried yesterday. the last victims of the december 14 massacre. at the same time this horrific incident is pushing gun reform to the top of the national agenda. >> reporter: the funeral for 6-year-old emily parker held in ogden utah, the only the newtown massacre buried outside of connecticut. >> an example to the world about purity, innocence, tragedy and forgiveness. >> services were held for 7-year-old josephine gay who liked peanut butter and the colder purple. ana grace marquez greene was buried in bloomfield, her

coffin transported in a horsedrawn carriage. the tragic deaths of the 20 children and 6 adults at the sandy hook school already are triggered action to help reduce gun violence and save lives. bridgeport, connecticut, raised over $100,000 to fund a gun buyback. gun owners cashed in their weapons. >> even if you get one off the street it is one less that has the potential to get into the wrong hands. >> reporter: the national debate reignited with a proposal to station armed guards in every school in the country. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> reporter: several school districts already have armed officers in their schools. abc news, new york. as you just heard and probably know, the national rifle association national school shield proposal unveiled in the wake of the connecticut shoe shooting calls for every school to have an armed guard for protection but is that the

on our early morning broadcast it seems like the rain was moderate. lisa here now to tell us it is picking up out there. >> a flood warning in effect for sonoma a county. petaluma reporting flooding there and pen grove park and stony brook road. 30 degrees at the tahoe valley airport. 34 truckie. the winds picking up.

the winter storm warning continues until 4:00 tomorrow morning. close her to home, mount tam very strong winds. lots of heavy rain. and the flooding i talked about we will show you petaluma and the points around it in just a moment. our roof camera looking at some very, very soggy conditions. so live doppler 7hd just filling the screen with moderate to heavy rain all throughout the bay area as the strong cold front pushes onshore. so first up, up in the north bay where you are looking at the heavy rain from sonoma, napa, petaluma. highway 101. some of this is the higher elevations where not a lot of people live but as you get closer down to highway 1 here and that is where we are looking at the flooding over the old bridge there. really take some care there. and the rain will continue to pick up for the next couple of hours. so you need to get on out of that area up in petaluma.

around the central bay, moderate rain from alameda, san leandro. heavier union city back. redwood city across the bay into union city. 680 and 880 heavier rain and back westward around the coast around wood acre, woodside and 101 and 280 looking at more heavy to moderate rain. down around the south bay through milpedas and into san jose. heavy rain here gilroy and holleyster reporting rain. and with that the wind advisory through 1:00 in the north bay. 33 miles an hour here. half moon bay, 43-mile an hour gusts. airport delays at sfo and the flood warning until 12:45 on the north bay. we are looking at this for the next several hours, are the heavier rain. a look at lake tahoe with the

snow and the winter storm warning right on through the day tonight. the snow picks up tonight. 53 mountain view you. 51 san jose. looking at the heavy rain and wind this morning. clearing later on this afternoon. it will be after 1:00 in the north bay. after 3:00 in parts of the south bay and a dry christmas eve. the wind advisories 1:00 north and 3:00 athen 3:00 peninsula . some of the rain coming down who are dontally. it won't take much to bring down power lines and a few branches and maybe even some trees. the storm system getting enhanced as it hits the san mateo coast. notice by noon time still looking at that heavy rain in marin county through the peninsula. the san mateo coast and by 4:00 looks like it wants to clear parts of the south bay and central coast. dry tonight right on through tomorrow. if you need to get out and get more are christmas gifts

perhaps tomorrow is your day to do that. into christmas day notice by 11:00 rain in the north bay and by the afternoon it does press south. a much weaker system. takes us into wednesday morning. we will get a break after this system drops another inch to inch and a half in the east bay, the south bay, the peninsula. the heavy rain rates along the north bay an santa cruz mounta. upper 50s today. the rain continue its the next two or three hours. the gusty winds and flood warning for petaluma and sonoma county and along the central coast you will notice the rain through you the later after january. dry tomorrow. a few lingering showers wednesday. thursday and friday don't look too bad and the last weekend of the year we can see more rain. >> we need that rain tomorrow for a little drying out. >> yes, the breaks have been very, very important. >> check out sports. the raiders on the road to play

the latest storm is pounding the bay area right now. let's go to our meteorologist lisa. good morning, carolyn. a flood warning up in the north bay for sonoma county near petaluma. a look outside from the emeryville camera and looking at a wind advisory through early afternoon as the strong cold front is getting enhanced as it it pushes along the coast right now. so the yellows you are seeing from the peninsula and the pounding rain up to the north bay bringing in the moderate to h heavy rain right now in sonoma. over west roenert park and further south near petaluma. stony point road and looking at h heavy rain and some flooding occurring with streams over their banks over into the the east bay. the rain is not as heavy but

still rainy from oakland to alameda. a heavier cell around union city and on the peninsula further south also into fremont. here is a look at some of that heavier precip as we go through half moon bay, montara, moss beach, redwood city and west bay shore right now. some of these are even getting even a few reds in there. the very h heavy rain will continue with the gusty winds from the peninsula, the east bay, the santa cruz mountains into the north bay for the next couple of hours. with the wind gusts anywhere from 15 to 50 miles an hour. we saw keira at the coast there and with the gust request winds and rain coming down it is very dangerous out there. be careful and we will track it for you the rest of the morning. carolyn? >> lisa, thank you. the treacherous conditions, wind and rain are churning up the surf along the coast. you described the conditions as

extremely windy? >> reporter: yes. right on cue, carolyn. extremely windy. and the rain is pounding harder. it sounds like hail is falling on my hood right now. just to give you a little indication of how you windy it is, signs across the sidewalk have fallen down. this warning of the dangerous waves breaking over the sea wall, use caution, of course. the waves are breaking over the sea wall. as you can see the swells about 7.5 feet right now. people across the bay area can expect waves of up to 16 feet today. so as lisa was saying, try to stay indoors. it is dangerous out here. and even to be walking. but, of course, to be driving. speak of walking, no one is out here this morning. really they are staying inside, a heeding all of the warnings that it is not safe to be out. we did encounter one woman who lives about a block from the pier and she was walking her little dog daisy and i asked her about that.

you deal with the wind and the rain? >> well, we sort of wait and look out and see if it isn't raining so hard and then go out when it is not raining very hard. >> reporter: so she has a method to living in pacifica her whole life. she knows when to go outside and when not. and this would be the time not to go outside. i'm telling you as the morning progresses it is getting heavier. the rain is getting harder. actually kind of stinging my face right now and it is more windy than it has been than we have seen all morning and we have been out here since about 4 am. my phone is not really working even though i have it in this ziploc bag but i do have is the live doppler 7hd i'm checking all morning to stay up to the moment on conditions and hopefully you will do that, too, on your abc 7 news app before you head out today if you have to go out today. if not please stay inside and be he safe.

reporting live in pacifica, abc 7 news. >> you know the conditions even without your live doppler 7hd. thank you. >> yes. >> well, this morning's storm has really slowed down travel for some folks trying to head for holiday vacations. there are lengthy delays at san francisco international airport where 100,000 people passed through yesterday. abc 7 news reporter nick smith joins us live from sfo with the weather impact. nick, this is is one of the busiest travel days of the year. >> carolyn, one of the busiest travel days and one of the days that they really want to try to get people to their destinations as quickly as possible. the wind has been the factor because the wind advisory is in effect and we felt that wind driving down 101 to sfo. people are arriving now and can expect flight delays. there is an air traffic management program in effect for flights arriving to sfo and causing some of the arriving flights to be delayed at least one hour.

sfo duty manager lily wang tells me there will be delay until at least midnight and some flights have been canceled. >> so far we had nine departures and 16 arrivals canceled since this morning. >> reporter: those delays will mostly affect commuter flights and traffic along the west coast. i mentioned that wind advisory currently in effect. that plays a large role in reducing visibility and different landing patterns. flights now approaching from the northeast over oakland airport instead of from the southeast over the san mateo bridge. we do know that the wind will cause flight delays until at least midnight. if you are leaving out of sfo or picking someone up, the duty manager suggests that you call ahead to make sure that that flight is arriving on time or taking off on time. again, those cancellations are in effect so make sure that your flight is is not among those that are listed.

we also can tell you that they it are suggesting that you use the cell phone parking lot if you are picking someone up because security has been tight. they are moving people along as quickly as they pull up and i, too, am using my plastic bag to keep things dry. it is a wet one out here so drive safely if you have to venture out at all. nick smith, abc 7 news. san francisco public works crews cleaning up a gas station's toppled metal canopy that fell over during friday afternoon's storm. fortunately, no one was injured at this 76 station at 17th when the large metal roof came crashing down right where people fuel up. an attendant quickly shut off the power to the pump so in gas spilled. a tree toppled over this car. a few hours earlier the ohmer of the disabled car was sitting inside waiting for help. drivers dealing with

challenging conditions crossing the sierra due to snow and ice this morning. chains are required at gold run in plaster county but 80 is open again for cars and big rigs alike. u.s. 50 to south lake tahoe also has chain controls from twin bridges to meyers over echo summit. i-80 shut down for three hours yesterday because of spinouts. crews say holiday travelers h should expect chain controls to continue. >> there is definitely going to be chain control for the next two days at least going into christmas. >> well, here is the good news about all of that snow. five feet of fresh snow. the ski resorts report excellent conditions for the always busy christmas week. stay with abc 7 news for continuing storm watch coverage. lisa will have the full forecast in just a few minutes. we'll be tracking the storm all day in our newscast and we will

>> lisa just cited a litany of weather woes from wind advisories to flooding. what else? >> flooding at sonoma creek. at aqua caliente up to 18 feet right now. the stream coming over its banks and the flood warning until 1:00 in afternoon in the north bay around sonoma. the tahoe valley airport is reporting 34 degrees. this is heavenly and we are looking at the ski lifts going despite the gusty winds and the winter storm warning through tomorrow morning. 1 to 2 feet at lake level. up to 5 feet above 7,000 feet. avalanche warnings there because of the weak snow pack earlier in the month and now with more h heavy snow some dangerous conditions there. windy, 8.

peaks could see gusts up to 100 miles an hour. san rafael, moderate rain. flooding to the north in sonoma valley and creek. and emeryville also with light to moderate rain part of the central day not looking at the heavy, heavy rain right now but much of the peninsula and the east bay further south looking to heavy rain and live doppler 7hd confirms that we are in the middle of a very strong cold front that is bringing the gusty winds now. thunderstorms this afternoon. and some enhanced rain as the front pushes along the coast. look at all of those yellows up to the north. here is a look at jener and yontville. napa and sonoma. american canyon in vallejo, highway 37. a flash flood warning until 12:45 for willow brooke at pen grove park. not just confined to petaluma. some of the storm drains overwhelmed and a closer inspection here, american

canyon and the yellows, the heavy rain. further south from san leandro and 580 castro valley looking at the moderate rain. look at the reds here from fremont out over the bay. as we go further to the peninsula further west you can see the rain coming down pretty good with the greens and yellows from mountain view. and around san jose right now the rain picking up as well from cupertino, santa clara and santa cruz mountains. half moon bay and 26-mile an hour wind gusts from hayward into the livermore valley. we showed you the snow and temperatures in the upper 40s to the lower 50s right now. very gusty winds. heavy rain. clearing by about 1:00 in the north bay. going to take to about 3:00 in the south bay. a dry christmas eve and the winds continuing to pick up to

tharily afternoon north. 3:00 south. and here is where we are getting that enhancement right along the peninsula as the strong cold front ushers in the heavier rain and by noon time you will notice we are still looking at heavy rain from the delta back along the coast and along the peninsula. it is 4:00 when we begin to clear out from the east bay and the overnight hours we are clear. we are looking at a dry day for christmas eve. a fantastic break so that the storm drains can get cleared out and the rivers and streams recede. by christmas morning looking at rain in ukiah and santa rosa. by the afternoon, san francisco and evening takes us into wednesday morning just light showers, though. not like what we are seeing now but this forecasted rainfall through tonight an inch to an inch and a half, east bay and south bay and very heavy snow. could be just a banner year. but you chain controls. upper 50s.

ranging from obesity to diabetes. they attached a kind of genetic light switch to an enzyme pathway associated with the production of glucose or blood sugar. the result is a fish that can be used as a living swimming litmus test. it is not only visible to researchers. a brighter light indicates a higher level of glucose used as a barometer in obesity research. the team zeroed in on a potential obesity drug after screening near early 2500 candidates using the genetically modified fish. >> we put three in every single well and we add the drug compound to like one drug per well to test roughly 100 drugs per plate. >> and depending on the type of research involved they could cut down on the need for animal test iting in m mammals.
